Truth or Myth?

The question arises when we talk about food combination in our daily life. We take three main meals per day, and some might have more meals than any others.

Combination of various food can not be avoided since, humans are omnivorous animal, means we take food sources both from plants and animals.

We tend to combine various food sources as in one meal. Therefore, combination of food happens all the time.

Have you ever experienced uncomfortable feelings after taking some combination of food?

Most of the time, we heard of friends and relatives taking about some food are not suppose to take together as they will cause certain effect to our body. whether is true or myth?

Common claims :
1. Durian and alcohol
2.Coca-cola with menthos


What is food aversion?

Food aversion happens when food consumed resulted in physical harm or if eating these foods reputed to cause physical harm. The effects might not cause serious sickness or damage to organs, but it might give uncomfortable felling and effects like vomiting and stomach discomfort.

What about pomegranate with crab?

Pomegranate


It is nearly round, tough skin on the outer layer of the fruits. It is normally yellow overlaid with light or deep pink.

The inside content is separated by membranous, it has white, spongy, tissue into compartments. Which is filled with sacs that is sweet and juicy. (California rare fruit growers, inc,1997)


Benefits of pomegranate

Traditionally used as medicines.

Treat Diarrhea
Pomegranate juice is used to treat diarrhoa, and reduces fevers.

Anti-parasites agent

The root bark of the tree is can be used to treat intestinal parasites, mainly tapeworm.

Scientifically proven Antioxidant effect
Pomegranate contains phytochemicals with antioxidant action. (Top Cultures, 2009)

Pomegranate juice claimed to have high antioxidant activity. A study was performed in to investigate the effect pomogranate juice ingestion on general oxidation status. The experiment was conducted a mice, which later shown positive effect against oxidative stress in mice. (Al. Prof. HernĂ¢ni Monteiro,2007)

Pomegranate polyphenols's ability to inhibit low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, macrophage foam cell formation and atherosclerosis.

Pomegranates Promote a Healthy Heart

Clinical research shows that:

Pomegranate helps to prevent heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

This is because pomegranates have the potential to thin the blood, increase blood flow to the heart, reduce blood pressure, reduce plaque in the arteries, and reduce bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol.


Dr. Fuhrman on his blog discusses healing properties of pomegranate include:

· Potent anti-cancer and immune supporting effects

· Inhibits abnormal platelet aggregation that could cause heart attacks, strokes and embolic disease

· Lowers cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors

· Powerful anti-oxidant

Crab




Crab is an exoskeleton crustaceans. Normally crabs meat are prepared and to be eaten in different cooking style. This is the hard shell crab where we only eat the meat.





Some crabs can be eaten whole, it is also known as soft shell crab.

Our typical style of cooking of crab include: Sweet and sour crab, black pepper crab, roasted crab and so on.

Crab meat content high in protein and minerals.


Benefits of crab

Crabs are low in calorie and fat

Four ounce serving of crab meat contain only 98 calories, and with less than two grams of fat per serving.

Crabs are high in omega 3 fatty acids

Crab meat supply a good source of omega 3 fatty acid. Omega 3 fatty acid helps to lower triglycerides and blood pressure, which in turn to lower the risk of heart diseases.
Omega 3’s able to reduce the inflammation, enhance immune function, and even lower the risk of certain types of cancer.

Combination of crab meat and pomegranate

Citrus Crabmeat Salad with Pomegranate Seeds Recipe


2 cups torn romaine lettuce
3 cups mesclun mix
2 cups orange sections
1/2 small red onion, sliced and separated into rings
1 medium avocado, peeled and sliced
4 ounces crab meat
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/2 cup pomegranate seeds


Method:
1. Combine lettuces. Add orange sections, onion, avocado and crab meat; toss gently.
2. Combine oil, honey and lime juice; stir well. Drizzle over salad. Top with pomegranate seeds. Serves 4.

Crab pomegranate appetizer


Lump crabmeat, drained and shell pieces removed - 4 ounces
cantaloupe, peeled, seeded, and cut lengthwise - 1/2 (2-pound)
Fresh lime juice - 1 tspn
Pomegranate seeds- 1/2 cup


Method:
1. Arrange crab meat at the middle
2. Sprinkle some lime juice and top with pomegranate seeds




Conclusion:


The recipes above are common combination of Crab and pomegranate.
They are commonly combined in food where we always used to prepare salads and appetizers. There's no significant effect of this food that it will cause food aversion.

High antioxidant of pomegranate has anti-cancer and boost up immune system, while crab meat provides a diet with low in mercury and fat content. Crab meat is also high in protein and minerals. Although, crab meats has a higher cholesterol content, but pomegranate has the ability of lowering the cholesterol level. Which in terms giving a perfect combination

Therefore, it fair to say that: It is a myth that pomegranate and crab meat give harmful effects.
